The Department of Philosophy is one of the oldest Department of Dr. Kanailal Bhattacharyya College, Howrah. It was established in 1985 and is active since the inception of the college under the headship of Prof. Sipra Ganguly. Philosophy Department’s undergraduate course commenced with the General course and gradually evolved by offering an Honours course in 2004. At present, the faculty position of the Department includes two Associated Professors (UGC-approved), one state-aided college teacher (SACT) and one guest faculty. Admission to the Department is strictly based on merit. Along with regular classroom teaching through lectures and interactive sessions, the Department also offers seminars/presentations and encourages students’ active participation to impart updated knowledge. The department has a well-equipped library (along with the computer facility and reading room) with more than 1400 specialized books. In 2018, under the guidelines of the University of Calcutta, this Department incorporated the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and carrying out the same to date. As a part of the extension activity, the Philosophy Department also participated in a collaborative Faculty Exchange Programme with Prabhu Jagatbandhu College Howrah in 2019. After the outbreak of the recent COVID-19 Pandemic, the Department has welcomed the initiative of online teaching and organized classes and webinars to escalate uninterrupted teaching.
