With the primary objective of providing quality education in this subject, Department of Zoology, Dr. Kanailal Bhattacharyya College was established in 2008 with general course. In 2012, Zoology Honours course was introduced. Currently the department has one UGC approved full time faculty and four State Aided College teachers along with two non-teaching supporting staffs.

Many successful students have enrolled themselves in M.Sc courses and many have successfully secured their jobs in both Govt. and private sectors as well.

The departmental wet laboratories are well equipped with several sets of instruments related to the curriculum. Departmental seminal library facilities, smart room with LCD projector, desktop computers with internet connection help to meet the academic need of the students.

In every year, field studies are arranged in both local areas and different national park or sanctuaries or coastal areas of India according to the curriculum in both Honours and General courses. Students are motivated towards science by departmental seminars where eminent scientists deliver their lectures. Students also participate in departmental seminars, bird watching and environmental audit. Every year departmental wall magazine is published with the active participation of students and teachers.

Besides, the Department engages in the all-over development of the students and tries to motivate and prepare them to excel both in academics/research as well as in extra-curricular activities.
