Know About Our College

It has been a long cherished dream of the people of Santragachi and the surrounding areas to have a Degree College in this locality. The dream was gradually turning into a moment.. At this juncture late Sudhir Kr. Ghosh, a benefactor and a Philantheopist agreed to donate his land and building situated at Santragachi, Dharmatala, for the establishment of an educational institution. After that into the initiation of the then local M.L.A. Sri Satyen Ghosh and some other important personalities of the area a board of Trustees was formed on 26.11.1984 and some allied organisational activities were undertaken on 10th March, 1985 in a public meeting presied over by Ex-chairman of Public Service Commission Raghu Das Baul and attended by donor Sudhir Kumar Ghosh a resolation was adopted that a degree College should be established after the name of Dr. Kanailal Bhattacharyya, an educationist, public leader and Ex-minister of Commerce and Industries, Govt. of West Bengal.
The College was granted affiliation by the Calcutta University & The State Govt. in September 1985. The then Higher Education Minister Late Prof. Sambhu Ghosh graced the inauguration ceremony as guest-in-cheif.
Before starting off fund raising programmes, a nine-member committee was set up with the then District Magistrate of Howrah Sri Sumantra Chowdhury as the President of the same. Some local bodies and many education lovers came in with monetary help. Under the leadership of noted engineer late Raghudas Baul, a group of dedicated engineers came forward to lay down the plan and supervise the reformation of the old building and estab-lishing new classroom. The consistent good result of the college, coupled with the fact that there was not many degree colleges in a vast surrounding locality, saw a recurrent rise in the number of the students. But the infrastructure was inadequate to this growing number of students. Along with this, the need for University grant and the demand of the local student community prompted initiatives for infrastructure development. Fund raising operations were organised with the aim of setting up new college building and the extension of the old one. Charity show organized by Mrs. Mamata Shankar and her ballet troupe and the State Government permitted lottery events raised considerable amounts.
