The Department began its journey in 1985 , as a General course and was upgraded to in 2001- 2002. Being in a backward district , like Howrah , the History Department had to deal with quite a lot of first generation learners. The teachers concerned not only imbibed inspiration to bring best out of them with interactive teaching method , also made them understand the both academic and professional relevance of the subject. Our aim was and is to instil sense of history and build a rational mindset. Through constant interaction, we could identify the strength and weaknesses of the students. All these had positive impact on examination results and consequent progression of meritorious students of the Department to Higher studies and Professional life. The Department has steadily built up a collection of both Text and Reference books for the benefit of the students. We are on course to initiate a Seminal Library and ICT tools to upgrade the students’ access to new areas of research in various topics of History. On the onset of online examination, the Department organised live demonstration of how to participate in examination , to the students. This was beneficial to the students , particularly residing in remote areas. However, we recognise , with additional faculty member , we can do better.
