About The Department

Plant Science is the important branch of life sciences, it deals with the various field covered by life science.  The important parameter of the subject Botany correlates with biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, agriculture, chemistry, biophysics, microbiology, forensic sciences and biotechnology. The department of botany started its journey in the year 2008, under the University of Calcutta. Initially department intake capacity was fifteen candidates in general courses with Botany, Physiology and Zoology permitted by the Calcutta University. The department is situated in the Science Block building, newly formed by the college campus. At an early stage in 2008 department was started by one Part–time teacher and one lab attendant, later two guest lecturers were recruited by the college. Later, in 2013, honours course in botany was started by taking fifteen candidates. One Assistant Professor was recruited in the college through College Service Commission. At present department has one Assistant professor and two SACT(STATE AIDED COLLEGE TEACHER).At present the Department can enroll 30 students in Honours level and 40students in General Course with affiliation from parent University. Botany department offers both honours and general courses in Botany which covers the basic plant sciences, plant anatomy, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, plant physiology, biotechnology, microbiology, mushroom cultivation, environmental science and biostatics through class room teaching, web based method, Google meet, group project, field visit etc.

Botany department has two specious well-equipped laboratories which contain different instruments like simple microscope, compound microscope, pH meter, autoclave, incubator, hot air oven, centrifuge, water bath and different digital balance with different ranges. The department has organized one State level webinar in 2021 on “Plant Fossils”, The Department has continued to promote differentextra-curricular activities among its students. Students put up wall magazine ‘PLANT SCIENCE AT A GLANCE” at regularinterval. The department has organised one day student webinar in 2021 “Biodiversity and its conservation”. Students are participated in various field work as per scheduled in different

Botany is the mother science in all life sciences; it enables students to understand the various application of plant science in multidimensional mode. It is very significant to improve the quality and quantity of agricultural productivity which is the basic needs of all living system, so understanding the plant science is very important for better improvement of human life.
