About The Department

Overview
Political Science often called ‘Politology’ is a social science which deals with the system of governance and the analysis of political activities, political thoughts, associated constitutions and political behaviour. The Department of Political science in Dr. Kanailal Bhattacharyya College is as old as the College itself. The subject was introduced right from its inception from 1986 first with offering general degree course. Later, Honours course was introduced from the year 1998-99. The Department is affiliated to University of Calcutta and follows the CBCS curriculum. The present intake capacity is 83.
At present the department has two full-time faculties- Dr. Anasua Chatterjee, Associate Professor and HoD who joined the department from 28.03.2001, Sk.Saddam Hossen, Assistant professor joined from 19.09.2019 and Prof Ellora Bhattacharyya, SACT-II (State-aided college teacher.) who joined the department from 19.09.2000.

 

AIMS OF THE SUBJECT:
The undergraduate syllabus as prescribed by University of Calcutta seeks to ingrain the following attributes to its students:

 

    • Critical Thinking: Studying Political science deepens the understanding of one of the most powerful forces of society operating on people, communities and individual. It helps to identify the assumptions that frame our thinking and actions, check out the degree to which these assumptions are valid today and seek new ideas from different perspectives.

 

    • Effective Communication: To acquaint learners with politics as a dynamic discipline and the radical changes that has occurred in its substance, method in recent years. To be able to comprehend the inter-linkages between various social science disciplines and the way they come together to throw a more focussed and better light on the problems.

 

    • Effective Citizenship: To acquaint learners of how the institutions of modern Indian state was formed and how these institutions have actually functioned over the last 75 years since Independence.

 

    • Social Interaction: Recognize different value systems including their own, elicit views of others, mediate disagreements and help reach conclusions in group settings.

 

    • Self- directed and life-long learning: Acquire the ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of social changes.

 

SCOPE OF THE SUBJECT:
    • The degree in Political science prepares the students for various competitive examinations like UPSC, PSC etc. because of the vast area of the subject and join the Indian Administrative and other services of the Government of India or state.
    • Students can sit for NET /SET Examination and join as educators in College and Universities.
    • Pursue Research work in Government sector or NGOs.
    • Having a degree in Public Administration later can potentially prepare for a career in formulating public policy, highway planning, rural development or even socio-economic research.
All the Faculties of the department are actively engaged in various academic pursuits including publication of articles in seminars, workshops, journals(both National and International besides fulfilling the responsibility of imparting quality education to the students. The faculties have undertaken two minor research projects funded by UGC.
The department believes in collaborative learning and overall comprehension of material and therefore to measure that both formal and informal forms of assessment like projects, Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) as per NAAC guidelines etc. are held at regular intervals. The Department conducts faculty exchange programme (with Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College Howrah), special lectures, class participation through student’s seminars, group discussions, debates etc. The department has also developed e-content resources, model answers, question bank catering to the needs of the students. The study materials, audio-lectures, and other scholarly works of eminent academicians have been uploaded in Google Classroom and College website. It has been extremely beneficial for students during the pandemic induced by Covid-19. The department at present is continuing with the process of imparting relevant information through online classes regularly and is totally committed to the all- round development of the students.

The Department tries to evaluate the programme-specific outcomes and course outcomes in three stages:
  1. DEPARTMENTAL MEETINGS AND PARENT-TEACHER MEETING: It holds meetings at regular intervals to distribute the syllabus for each academic session and for an appraisal of curricular deliverance and review of the performance of students. It is documented in departmental meetings. Parent–teacher and student-teacher interface meetings are often arranged. Students who are slow learners are identified and follow-up measures are taken accordingly. Parents and students have submitted their feedback on the effective deliverance of the curriculum and the method of evaluation through CIE which was introduced in 2021 as per NAAC guidelines.
  2. COLLECTION OF FEEDBACK: The department collects feedback on various curricular aspects from Students using structured proforma. Response collected in feedback is analyzed and recorded in departmental meetings for further course of actions. Feedback analysis reports are available in the college website.
  3. ACTION TAKEN REPORT: The information generated through this system has been used as a roadmap to address major issues raised by students and improve the quality of teaching-learning. Steps taken in meetings are available in the website in the form of ‘Action taken reports’ (ATRs).
