Department of Education was established in the year 1985 with general courses for the students. Honours course was initiated from the year 1998-1999. The course caters to under graduate students. The Department was started under the able hands of Late Professor Kamal Kumar Basu who set up the full department with total care and also referred and brought in relevant and recommendable books to the college library for the Honours and general students of the department. After his retirement the department was taken over by Dr. Sampa Ray Bagchi who joined in as a full time teacher recommended by College Service Commission as against another new post created on May 2005. The department also had a Government Approved part time teacher Prof. Buddhadeb Das and also Government Approved superannuated teacher Prof. Bishwa Ranjan Pradhan (who sincerely served the department with their expertise for quite a long time. Within this short tenure Prof. Kumkum Manna and Prof. Sreerupa Mukherjee served as the Guest Lecturer in the Department. Dr. Samir Kumar Naskar joined in the Department as a full time teacher recommended by College Service Commission in the vacant and retired position of Late Professor Kamal Kumar Basu in December 2016. At the inception, there was a growing demand for the subject, as there was an awakening awareness from the students to learn or delve into Humanities. The focus was on the subjects like Sociology or Education which were very hard to find with proper combination in all colleges excepting a few. Our College has the privilege to have the subject Education with Honours which was the trend during that tenure which appealed to the students. The dedication and hard work of the faculties and their educational guidance for the individual students, and consistent good results of the Department were also recognized. There is a great scope for the students after they finish their graduation and qualify for SSC they get to teach in schools. After Higher Secondary (with 50% marks) if the students do a D.El.Ed. course and qualify for TET they can teach in schools from class 1to 5, if they do B.Ed. course after B.A. Honours/M.A.(with 50% marks) in Education and qualify for SSC they can teach from class 11 to class 12 as Subject Teacher.With a training in Montessori they can teach in the preprimary sections. They also have a chance to do administrative jobs as well, as of Sub Inspector of Schools but they have to qualify the PSC exams for the same. They can also become School Counsellors after doing a diploma course in Counselling from an Institution of repute. They can also work as Psychological Counsellors anywhere like Juvenile Homes, NGO’s or in other Organisations. Moreover, if they pursue with higher education after completing M.A.in Education with 55 percent, they have to qualify NET/SLET to get entry into JRF under UGC and get into Projects or Research in Universities. M.A. in Education with NET qualification, students can get Professorship in General Colleges/Universities and also M.A. in Education with NET and B.Ed. / M.Ed. qualification, students can get Professorship in B. Ed Colleges/ B.Ed. Universities. Other than this, the subject has more to offer like having special papers like Teacher Education, Guidance Counselling, Population Education, Research Methodology, Environmental Education, Statistics, as a student has the chance to excel as an expert in these individual fields. As of growing demand of the subject and its expertised knowledge, there is also a growing demand of Educationists in the field like in SCERT, NCERT, in Planning as Education and Administrative Officers. M.A.in Education, students can also become Text Book Analyst, Curriculum Developer, Test Developer and also be an Expert in Adult Education, Extension Education Programme.
